7:30AM-9:45AM USS Constitution Ship Tour, begins at 8AM sharp!  This is a private tour for our group before opening hours.  You will need picture ID to board the ship and ALL participants must be present for the tour to begin.  The USS Constitution does not provide bathrooms or changing rooms for any guests during events hosted at the ship. 

10AM-11:00AM: USS Constitution Museum Presentation: Age of Agony

    Life at sea was dangerous in 1812. Between illness, accidents, and combat wounds, the crew of an Age of Sail warship faced daily struggles to survive. Find out how the ship's surgeon played a crucial role in keeping these men alive and in fighting condition.

Speaker Profile:

Seumas Whitham (he/they), Visitor Experience Representative, USS Constitution Museum

    Seumas is a recent graduate of University of Maine Orno and a museum educator at USS Constitution Museum. Their passion for maritime history was sparked by reading Moby-Dick in high school which eventually led them to Patrick O'Brien's Master and Commander series and becoming especially enamored by the fictional character Dr. Stephen Maturin, a naval surgeon. 

After Seumas began working at the museum in the summer of 2022, they were inspired to learn about the real history of surgeons' aboard ships like Constitution and the history of medicine during the Age of Sail, and they have been exuberant in sharing that knowledge with museum visitors through the Age of Agony program.
